Following the fields of Critical Discourse Analysis and the Theory of Argumentation in pragmatics, this paper focuses on the lexical (propositional) and intentional (illocutive) strategies that Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez uses to build his political persona as well as his rapport with the public during the COVID-19 pandemic. On the basis of a qualitative analysis the objective is to determine how and to what degree a language choice functions as a discursive strategy to obtain specific political effects. The corpus constitutes selected speeches presented between March 2020 and December 2021.Downloads
